What is Femto-LASIK?
Femto-LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery. It is a further development of LASIK and is currently one of the most common and popular laser eye treatments. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism can be successfully treated with Femto-LASIK surgery. Experience a whole new quality of life in a small amount of time.
Quite simply
The Femto-LASIK procedure in four steps
Your Femto-LASIK surgery at betterview takes place in four simple steps:
Preliminary exam
In your first 30-minute preliminary exam, we'll determine if you're a good candidate for laser eye surgery with Femto-LASIK. We'll examine your eye's natural lens, the condition and thickness of your cornea and any vision correction you're using now.
Primary exam
The primary exam is also free with no obligation. We'll conduct any further examinations to ensure the best possible treatment. During the primary exam, we'll also determine if Femto-LASIK is the most suitable treatment option for you, or if there's an alternative that works better. The primary exam takes about 45 minutes.
Femto-LASIK surgery
First, your eyes will be treated with numbing drops Then, a femtosecond laser is used to create a thin cover ("flap") in the uppermost corneal layer of the eye ("epithelium") and folded aside. The excimer laser then shapes the exposed cornea to correct the ametropia. The procedure takes less than 15 minutes.
Follow-up visits
The first post-op visit takes place the following day. We examine your eyes thoroughly to evaluate the results of the Femto-LASIK procedure and the healing process.
What you need
Am I a good candidate for laser eye surgery with Femto-LASIK?
Femto-LASIK is extremely safe and relatively simple, but it may not be suitable for everyone. About 98% of 18 to 45 year-olds are good candidates for Femto-LASIK surgery.
The following conditions should apply to you:
- Myopia up to -10 diopters
- Farsightedness up to +4 diopters
- Astigmatism up to 6 diopters
If your cornea is too thin or you have very dry eyes then you may not be a good candidate for this procedure. Alternative treatments may include laser treatment with Trans-PRK or lens implantation.
Advantages of Femto-LASIK
Improved vision within 24 hours
Treatment with Femto-LASIK improves vision in a short period of time: most of those treated achieve nearly full vision the very next day.
Treatment in just 15 minutes
The laser is applied to the eye for just a few seconds, which is why the actual procedure takes less than 15 minutes.
Completely painless
Before the procedure, your eyes will be treated with numbing drops. You may experience some slight pain in the hours following the procedure.
Safe and precise
The laser procedure is with minimal contact, ensuring maximum safety and precision. If the eye moves, the device automatically switches off.
High success rate
About 95% of people who undergo laser eye surgery achieve 100% vision. If this is not achieved, the procedure can usually be done again.
During a 30-minute, no-obligation, free initial consultation on site, we'll find out whether you can have your vision corrected with a laser and which treatment option is best for you.
Commonly asked questions about Femto-LASIK

What is the difference between Femto-LASIK and LASIK?
Femto-LASIK is a further developed type of LASIK. Whereas LASIK utilises a blade to create the so-called flap in the cornea, Femto-LASIK uses a high precision femtosecond laser for this step. With Femto-LASIK, the cornea is treated exclusively with the laser and is therefore with minimal contact.
What side effects can occur after Femto-LASIK?
The Femto-LASIK procedure is short and painless. However, temporary side effects can occur after treatment: slightly blurred vision, for example is perfectly normal and any dryness can be treated with prescribed eye drops that we provide.
How long does Femto-LASIK last?
Femto-LASIK results are permanent and last a lifetime. However, this treatment does not protect against presbyopia, in which the elasticity of the lens decreases with time starting at age 45. Presbyopia can be corrected with vision aids or permanently fixed with a refractive lens exchange.
What is the recovery time after Femto-LASIK?
Most patients are able to drive and return to work the next day. During the procedure, the uppermost layer of the cornea is not removed rather, a small flap is created and temporarily folded aside. This makes Femto-LASIK recovery time relatively quick, as the flap reattaches itself and heals on its own after surgery.
How much does Femto-LASIK cost?
Femto-LASIK procedure costs differ based on the service provider. At betterview the procedure costs £1,990 per eye. In contrast to most other providers, our price includes everything so there are no unexpected costs. Your preliminary and main examinations are free of charge and without obligation - you only pay if you actually decide to undergo the treatment. Convenient instalment payments are also an option.
