1

Preliminary exam

Open Icon

The free, no-obligation preliminary examination takes place at our Westfield White City clinic and only takes 30 minutes. During this assessment, we will evaluate your visual acuity, conduct a detailed eye examination and also review your history with previous vision aids. This will help us determine if your eyes are suitable for the SMILE Pro procedure.

2

General Inspection

Open Icon

The general inspection takes 45 minutes. It is free with no-obligation to continue and you will only be charged if you decide to proceed with treatment. During this examination, your vision will be re-evaluated, and additional tests on your eyes will be conducted. This inspection ensures that SMILE Pro is the most suitable laser eye surgery to deliver the best possible results for your eyes.

3

Laser Treatment

Before we begin with the SMILE pro eye operation, you will be given anaesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes. We will then use the state of the art Zeiss VisuMax 800 femtosecond laser to create a thin lens, known as a lenticule, along with a small opening just a few millimetres in size within the cornea. The treating doctor will carefully remove the lenticule through this opening. This entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes for both eyes.

4

Follow-Up

The first check-up will take place in our London clinic four days after your SMILE Pro eye surgery. During this visit, your vision will be assessed without the use of visual aids, such as glasses. In most cases after the SMILE laser procedure, this is when a significant portion of your full vision will be restored. The majority of patients are able to resume driving the next day and return to their usual daily activities without any issues.

Timetable For Your SMILE Pro Treatment

Below, we outline step by step what you can expect during your SMILE Pro laser eye surgery at betterview. From the initial free preliminary examination to the treatment itself, as well as potential side effects and the post-surgery aftercare.

  • Before the treatment

    Preliminary and main examination

First there is a free, no-obligation preliminary examination where we will determine if you’re a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery and which eye treatment would be best for you.

The main examination lasts approximately 45 minutes and involves a thorough assessment of your vision, cornea, and the back of your eye. This ensures that SMILE Pro is the most appropriate laser eye treatment for you.

It is important that you refrain from wearing contact lenses for at least four days before this appointment. It is also advised that you do not drive to the Westfield White City clinic for the appointment as the eye drops that are administered may temporarily impair your vision for several hours, meaning you will not be able to drive home.

  • Day of treatment

    The Procedure

The third appointment at betterview is when the SMILE laser surgery takes place. Your eyes will be numbed with eye drops, and the eye area will be disinfected in preparation for the procedure. SMILE Pro is a minimally invasive treatment where we will use eyelid holders to gently keep your eyes open, and then the femtosecond laser is employed. The laser creates a small opening and a thin corneal lens, known as a lenticule. The treating doctor will then remove the loose lenticule through the opening. We recommend allowing approximately one hour for the entire appointment.

  • After the first few hours

    Possible Laser Eye Surgery Side-Effects

Immediately after the treatment, it is normal for your eyes to be sensitive to light, appear red, or feel as though there is something in them. Other common side effects in the first 2-3 days may include blurred vision, watery, dry, or burning eyes, and temporary fluctuations in vision. It is recommended to wear sunglasses on your way home to protect your eyes from glare and particles.*

  • After 24 hours

    First Follow-Up Appointment

In your first follow-up appointment, which will take place at our London clinic four days after the treatment, your vision will be assessed without the use of visual aids. Typically you will have nearly regained your full vision by this time, and a certificate from the road traffic authority can be provided to say you’re safe to drive. In general, you can resume your daily activities as usual. However, please continue to follow the post-treatment recovery guide and use the prescribed eye drops as outlined in your eye drop plan.

  • After 7 days

Second Follow-Up Appointment and Resuming Everyday Activities

The second follow-up appointment is scheduled for two weeks after your SMILE Pro laser eye treatment. By this time, you will have fully regained your vision and should no longer experience any significant side effects. After these two weeks, you can resume swimming, sports, and using saunas, as well as applying make-up and creams around the eye area. If you have any questions or need further information, our Medical Team at the Westfield White City clinic and our Customer Care Team are available to assist you by phone at any time.

*Please note that the perception of pain and symptoms can vary and be individually pronounced from person to person. Therefore, the timeline may also be slightly different for you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About SMILE Pro Laser Eye Treatment

Here, you'll find the most common questions and answers about laser eye surgery at betterview in London. If your question isn't answered here, please feel free to contact us.

What are the Benefits of SMILE Pro Compared to Other Laser Eye Treatments?

Unlike Femto-LASIK, which creates a flap, and Trans-PRK, which requires a significantly longer healing time, SMILE Pro combines the benefits of both treatments. It offers a minimally invasive approach with a quick and painless recovery.

Is SMILE Laser Eye Surgery Safe?

SMILE Pro laser eye surgery is a safe and minimally invasive procedure, performed with advanced technology for precise and reliable results.

What are the Possible Side Effects of SMILE Pro Eye Surgery?

As with any refractive surgery, potential side effects of SMILE Pro include temporary cloudy vision in the first few hours, increased sensitivity to light, and dry eyes in the first few days following treatment.

How Long Does SMILE Laser Eye Surgery Last?

SMILE Pro eye surgery is generally permanent, like other laser eye treatments. If necessary, follow-up treatment is usually possible, provided the cornea is thick enough. In such cases, correction is typically performed using Trans-PRK.

When Can I Expect to Have Full Vision?

In the days following treatment, your vision will improve significantly, reaching around 80% of your normal vision. You may resume driving once you’ve received a certificate from the road traffic authority. You can expect to have full vision 3-4 days after the SMILE laser procedure.

When is SMILE Pro Not Possible?

SMILE Pro is not suitable for those with long-sightedness or presbyopia. Alternative treatments for farsightedness include Femto-LASIK or Trans-PRK. Presbyopia can be addressed with a refractive lens exchange.

What Do I Need to Do After My SMILE Pro Treatment?

After the SMILE Pro laser eye treatment, it is important to attend all follow-up appointments at the London clinic, follow the aftercare instructions provided by our Medical Team, and use the prescribed eye drops according to the recommended schedule.

How Much Does SMILE Pro Eye Surgery Cost at betterview London?
